Positioning bird feeders
Positioning bird feeders in the ideal place will obviously depend on the size and nature of your garden. In addition, you will of course want bird feeders in place where they can be seen and enjoyed from a window in your house. As a general guide though here's our thoughts on bird feeder positioning:
-
Avoid having bird feeders and bird tables too close to shrubs and hedges where cats can hide
-
Bird feeders can be hung from trees or held in place by a special pole - such as the Droll Yankee Garden Pole to see one
-
The exact position of bird feeders and your bird table should ideally be changed every few weeks (see 'Importance of keeping feeders and feeding areas clean')
-
Bird feeders should be at least 1.2metres off the ground (to the base of the feeder) - this helping to protect feeding birds from preying cats
Particularly in the winter months, it's a good idea to have bird tables (especially wooden ones) in a position where they get direct sunlight. This helps keep them dry and prevents the build-up of green algae on the surfaces.
For smaller gardens and therefore where are there are less options to position feeders, a
stand with a number of hanging arms - make a lot of sense. We sell several of this type of product - click the above link to see them
